Distribution Director, Colchester

As Distribution Director, your responsibilities will extend to multiple warehouse operations in the UK, and service both PRH publishing as well as a wide range of 3rd party publishers who we provide distribution services for.

As well as full operational day to day responsibility, the role has full financial accountability, as well as involvement in both Distribution and the wider Supply Chain strategies.


You will have the opportunity to define and lead the Distribution agenda both in respect to the day to day performance and strategic planning to react positively to volume changes and client and customer needs.

Publishing experience is not required, here at Penguin you will have the opportunity to utilise your knowledge of best practice in other industries to bring innovative and adventurous solutions to the organisation.


Day to day responsibilities.

  • Take a business owner role in support of multiple operations projects  to support the business model
  • Establish, agree and deliver performance objectives across all elements of Distribution, ensuring these are clearly communicated and supported.
  • Manage performance to optimise capability and efficiencies within a complex customer focused environment and develop best working practices to high consistent levels of service
  • Be responsible for all operational costs, support the building of budgets and forecasts in support of Distribution
  • You will be expected to drive a culture of continuous improvement by challenging existing practises and procedures and identifying and introducing opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety is inherent in the approach and the process of the site’s operations ensuring all statutory and Company Health and Safety requirements are met.
  • Ensure effective and harmonious management of union relations within areas of operational accountability and playing a key role in collective negotiations.
  • Ensure there is a collaborative approach across all the Distribution sites
  • Manage the day-to-day relationship with key stakeholders, including the Unions, the Exec and other on-site corporate departments.

  • Proven leadership experience of a complex Supply Chain
  • Extensive experience of working with a formal programme governance structure
  • You will be a proven leader who can set a vision and deliver an agreed strategy.
  • Demonstrable experience of being able to retain a high level view of the overall distribution function whilst still participating and contributing at the lowest level of detail.
  • Someone who naturally plans ahead and anticipates future situations and potential problems.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels allied with influencing skills and the ability to interact with senior people internally and externally.
  • Good analytical skills and the ability to present information derive knowledge from data and present in a clear and convincing manner.
  • Able to manage completing and conflicting priorities whilst giving clear direction.
