POSITION AVAILABLE

 

 

MANAGER, DATA SCIENCE (NEW YORK, NY): Responsible for managing and developing data science and analytics capabilities for Bertelsmann Education Group (“BEG”) initiatives, using machine learning models, predictive analytics and reporting to support key functions and optimize customer outcomes.   Duties include:  

•    10%:  Lead a data-product team to deliver data science and machine learning solutions from prototype to production, including partner with cross-functional leaders to define priorities and guide development aligned with organizational objectives; and collaborate with senior executives to embed data-driven decision-making and maximize impact. 
•    20%: Run sprint-driven project planning, defining scope, managing resource allocation, and ensuring production-ready outputs; and develop and execute data-driven strategies that deliver predictive insights and business roadmaps, defining KPIs to measure success across BEG ventures.
•    5%: Design high-performance SQL queries for data warehousing (using Spark, Hadoop, SSMS, Azure Synapse, BigQuery, Python) while maintaining data lake architecture with optimized schema design, partitioning, and indexing; and ensure system reliability through ETL pipelines testing and documentation.
•    5%: Develop large-scale data analysis and machine learning models by engineering data science solutions with scikit-learn, SparkML, Pandas, NumPy, and other advanced libraries.
•    10%: Design and maintain interactive PowerBI and Tableau dashboards as Business Intelligence solutions for analytical and executive decision-making; develop dynamic reports with complex computations (using DAX, Power Query, and Data Flow) optimizing performance, and ensure usability through best practices and interactive storytelling.
•    10%: Leverage the usage of cloud technologies like Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services for building scalable products and developing solutions using AI-driven techniques that automate processes, boost productivity, reduce costs, and generate new revenue opportunities for BEG; and keep up to date on new technologies and trends in data science and education technology.
•    15%: Automate data audits, enforce data privacy, monitor usage, implement role-based access control, and ensure compliance for data storage and distribution regulations in cloud environments.
•    15%: Manage partnerships with external vendors, consultants and institutions to deliver data solutions and actionable outcomes; drive cross-functional collaboration to ensure stakeholder alignment and engagement; and lead strategic exploration and adoption of next-generation tools and platforms.
•    10%: Coach the data-product team to develop skills and a mindset to align with the organizational goals; serve as a resource to ensure effective training and guidance; and create clear guidelines to evaluate work and oversee pilot projects effectively.

 

Position is located at the employer’s office in New York City.  Telecommuting is allowed two days per week.  

Salary range:  $169,541 to $174,541/year. 

 

Requires: Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Data Science, or Business Analytics plus three (3) years of experience as a Data Scientist (any title).  Experience must include:

•    3 years’ experience in programming using Python, Pandas, NumPy, Jupyter Notebook and GitHub
•    3 years’ experience in building data pipelines using SQL 
•    3 years’ experience building reports in PowerBI
•    3 years’ experience using the big data technology Spark
•    3 years’ experience using the cloud platforms Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform 
•    2 years’ experience in the education sector
