Job Purpose
The Web Press Operator is responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation of a 1-color web offset press, producing folded 16- to 32-page signatures. This role assists in press setup, make-ready, and production runs under the guidance of a senior operator. Operator ensures quality standards are met, performs routine maintenance tasks, and develops the technical and troubleshooting skills required.
Essential Duties & Job Responsibilities
Operations & Performance

Assist in day-to-day operations of the press under supervision of the lead operator.

Review job schedules and prepare required materials (plates, paper, ink).

Support make-ready operations, including paper changes, adjustments, and size setups.

Verify pagination, fold, cut-off, and alignment against specifications under guidance.

Monitor press during runs and perform quality checks as instructed.

Accurately complete production-related documentation and maintain skid tickets.

Assist in troubleshooting press or material issues, escalating to senior operator as needed.

Maintain accurate counts to avoid overages or shortages.
Maintenance & Housekeeping

Perform routine cleaning and lubrication of the press.

Assist with preventive maintenance tasks under supervision.

Keep press and work area clean, organized, and safe.
Continuous Improvement

Learn advanced press setup, troubleshooting, and adjustment techniques.

Participate in training to develop skills for advancement to Operator 1.

Suggest small improvements to processes and support departmental efficiency.
Other Responsibilities

Follow all safety policies and wear required PPE.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Press Supervisor or senior operators.
Technical Skills

Basic knowledge of web offset press operations.

Ability to assist in make-ready and minor press adjustments.

Familiarity with preventive maintenance tasks.

Strong mechanical aptitude and eagerness to learn advanced troubleshooting.

Requirements

Minimum 6 months of roll-tending or related pressroom experience required.

Basic math and measurement skills (fractions, decimals, ruler use).

Printing industry or manufacturing experience strongly preferred.
